11/4/20: Volleyball: LO2_A
In this volleyball season I have the job of being the setter. It has its ups and downs, but overall it is very challenging. First of all, I always have to get the second ball. Which means I have to call it, very loud and I have to move people out of my way to get it. Not only that but I also have to call "here!" so they know where they need to pass the ball for me to set, and then after calling "mine!" I also have to call who I am setting to. So there is a lot of yelling and directing in this job. I am not very good at yelling and although I can direct very well, it is still hard. So I have had to learn how to direct/lead my team and how to be loud. Although it started out a little rough, I am now very loud and yell my directions to the team. This has also improved our teamwork which was an expected yet also unexpected perk of me taking charge within our team. However while undertaking this setter challenge I have also improved on some new unexpected skills. For example, I have learned to be more encouraging to my team. Not that I am mean and only tell them that they're doing horrible, but now especially the new teammates, I give them advice on the court as well as congratulate them on their good plays, whether its just staying still when the ball comes or doing a great spike. It's really helped keep the team morale up during the game even if we're losing. I've also gotten better at communicating with my team. Not only yelling things I would as a setter, but also just basic commands that help us get into our positions. For example when they serve I yell "ball up!" or if they get it over the net I yell what kind of ball it is. I feel like having to take on the responsibility and challenge of being the setter has forced me to step into a leadership role on the team and improve skills that a team leader should have.
